Lenient Accounts of Warranted Assertability
نویسنده
چکیده
Some assertions are epistemically defective. True story: Shortly after moving to South Bend, Malou mentioned that she was surprised to see so many gulls around town. I thought for a moment, then replied: “You know, those birds fly all the way over here from Lake Michigan.” Unfortunately, knowledgeable Mark overheard my assertion, and promptly said: “You don’t know what you’re talking about. Our gulls aren’t from Lake Michigan; they live on the St. Joseph River.”Mark had just pointed out that my assertion about the gulls was epistemically defective. Say that you warrantedly assert P iff your assertion that P is epistemically proper. A theory of warranted assertability tells us when you have warrant to assert P—i.e., when you’re positioned to warrantedly assert P. Strict accounts of warranted assertability entail that you have warrant to assert P only if you know P. Lenient accounts allow that you could have warrant to assert things you don’t know. Much of the recent literature on warranted assertability focuses on the following strict account:

Truth, Superassertability, and Conceivability
Epistemic theories of truth identify truth with some positive epistemic status of truth-bearers. Sophisticated versions of this theory identify truth with some kind of idealization of warranted assertability. 1 The proposal is that a belief, sentence, proposition, etc. is true iff it is warrantedly assertable in ideal epistemic conditions a, b, c…, where a, b, c… signify some sort of projection...
متن کاملThe Puzzle of Conditionals with True Clauses: Against the Gricean Account
Indicative conditionals, that is sentences of the form “If p, then q,” belong to the most puzzling phenomena of language. On the majority of accounts of indicative conditionals, the truth of p and q suffices for “If p, then q” to be true or highly acceptable. Yet, many conditionals with true clauses, even if there is a meaningful connection between them, sound odd. The most common reaction to t...
متن کاملKnowledge, Certainty and Assertion
Researchers have debated whether knowledge or certainty is a better candidate for the norm of assertion. Should you make an assertion only if you know it’s true? Or should you make an assertion only if you’re certain it’s true? If either knowledge or certainty is a better candidate, then this will likely have detectable behavioral consequences. I report an experiment that tests for relevant beh...
متن کاملReligious Toleration in the Age of Ale Booye
Religious toleration meant as being lenient to and bearing opponents thoughts and ideas, has been accepted in Islam as a principle. During the history, Islamic states have been lenient to the followers of other religions in their realm and this method of governmental action has been counted as one of their bold character. Yet, the religious toleration has not been of one form; it had been of ma...
متن کاملEmpirical and theoretical support for lenient learning
Recently, an evolutionary model of Lenient Q-learning (LQ) has been proposed, providing theoretical guarantees of convergence to the global optimum in cooperative multi-agent learning. However, experiments reveal discrepancies between the predicted dynamics of the evolutionary model and the actual learning behavior of the Lenient Q-learning algorithm, which undermines its theoretical foundation...
